The band navigates boundaries between dualities, blurring lines and deconstructing dichotomies of light and dark, loud and quiet, material & immaterial, consciousness and unconsciousness. Their music is a vehicle through which these opposing spheres meet in reciprocal unison. The band formed in 2021, bonding over early psych rock records and started alchemically melding washy psych groves and intricate jazz inspired patterns to create a reverberation of lengthy bohemian soundscapes from day to night. The band, which includes long-time friends Hanno Jansen van Vuuren on drums and Hough Maritz on guitar and vocals, clearly share a connection that has been fortified by members previously steeped in the Cape Town psych rock scene, Lou Swart (PXLS, Sold Ash) on bass and synth and Pieter Labuschagne (Moskitos) on vocals, guitar and sax. Reinforced by a collective move to Cape Town, Sueños made a name for themselves in the DIY psych rock scene with their visceral, slick, nuanced, and well-thought-out sets, constantly shifting between manic and subdued. In 2024, Sueños released their debut EP, False Dawn, a five-track journey through dualities — blending fuzzed and reverb-soaked guitars, intricate rhythms, saxophone, and vivid, introspective lyrics. The EP captures the band’s signature approach of navigating tension between light and dark, chaos and calm, indulgence and release. This was followed by a 2025 double single release, Babylon, tracked in one uninterrupted 7 minute take, which saw the band move into a heavier sound and explore themes such as desire’s consuming force and the miracle of release. Known for immersive live performances, Sueños have appeared at several South African festivals including That 70’s Fest, Jua Festival of Sunshine, Pangea, Kunda Valley, Festival of Friends and Helter Skelter, consistently delivering visceral, memorable experiences that echo the energy of their recordings. PHAKATHIHailing from Cape Town, South Africa, Phakathi is a three-piece band exploring the darker, heavier corners of psychedelic rock. Blending hypnotic psychedelia, fuzz-drenched stoner riffs, crushing sludge and the raw tension of post-punk, the band creates a sound that is as immersive as it is abrasive.Built on heavy grooves, distorted textures, and brooding atmospheres, Phakathi moves between hypnotic repetition and moments of sheer sonic weight. Their music inhabits the space between chaos and control. Uncompromising and heavy, Phakathi delivers a sound that is raw, trippy and unapologetically loud.
