The silos of a rural boys mind
About This Event
?SynopsisSilos of a Rural Boy’s MindSilos of a Rural Boy’s Mind is a powerful one-man theatre piece that explores the inner world of a young boy growing up on rural farms in South Africa. Through poetry, storytelling, physical theatre, and raw emotional honesty, the play journeys through memories of labour, poverty, masculinity, silence, and survival.Set against the backdrop of vineyards, workers’ houses, pesticide exposure, and towering grain silos, the piece follows one boy’s struggle to understand what it means to become a man in a world where emotions are buried and dreams are treated like weakness. As he moves between childhood memories, family tensions, farm life, friendship, violence, and hope, the audience is taken deep into the “silos” of his mind — the hidden spaces where grief, rage, fear, and dreams are stored. The play gives voice to rural boys and farmworker communities whose stories are often unheard. It confronts inherited silence, generational trauma, toxic masculinity, and the harsh realities of labour, while also celebrating resilience, imagination, healing, and the transformative power of speaking out.Poetic, political, and deeply human, Silos of a Rural Boy’s Mind is both a personal testimony and a collective story of survival. It asks an urgent question: what happens when a generation of boys is taught to swallow their pain instead of speak it?Running approximately 60 minutes, this intimate and emotionally charged performance invites audiences to witness not only one boy’s journey, but the echoes of many lives hidden behind the beauty of the rural landscape.
