Stories of Fietas - Resistance and resilience

Fietas (as it was popularly known) is one of the oldest communities in the Western suburbs of Johannesburg, and one of the first 'locations' (multi-racial areas) established under the government of Paul Kruger in 1893.Under the Group Areas Act, this integrated, multi-cultural community was forcibly displaced to separate racial areas between 1956 and 1977. The majority of the inhabitants were moved to Lenasia and Soweto, and the newly-named Pageview was declared 'white'. This led to fierce resistance that continued into the 1980s. Today, Pageview is once again a vibrant, cosmopolitan area well worth a visit. Join the JHF on a fascinating walking tour through the area led by a former resident and activist. Along the way, we’ll hear some of the stories about the remaining buildings and streets that date back to its heyday between 1945 and 1960, including 14th Street, the bazaar, and 11th Street (the official dividing line between black and white communities). Our trail begins at the 23rd Street Mosque (painted green and white) on Krause Street in Pageview, and ends at Bismillah Restaurant in Mint Street, Fordsburg, where you will meet some of the people who used to live in Fietas and hear their stories.
